Hatfield 
 
With its Saxon origins, Hatfield has a long history. Its earliest mention comes in AD 970, appearing also in the Domesday book during the time of William the Conqueror. The town slowly grew over the centuries, notably with the arrival of the aerospace industry in the form of the De Havilland aircraft factory and airfield which was active between the 1930’s through to the 1990’s when British Airways closed the site. Hatfield was designated in the New Towns Act 1946, and along with Letchworth, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage, Hatfield New Town was created. A new town centre was built in a more favourable location than Old Hatfield, locating it on St Albans Road. The town centre features 1950’s modernist architecture and modern facilities including a cinema, a theatre, a museum and an art gallery. Hatfield also enjoys the open spaces and trees outlined in the New Town Plan.
